BAKERSFIELD TRISPOKES TRIATHLON CLUB

Congratulations to Elliot Feng, Mike Toland and Franck Pichard for conquering the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Taupo, New Zealand! The three Trispokes qualified for one of the world’s most prestigious events during races in 2023, and they mixed it up with more than 3,000 other top triathletes from all over the world in New Zealand!

Elliot, the fastest triathlete in our club, finished in 4 hours 46 minutes 18 seconds to place 216th in the men’s 30-34 division. Franck clocked 5:36:12 for 319th in the men’s 45-49 division.

Mike has been competing all year on a torn meniscus in a knee and has been trying to overcome it through physical therapy while still training and competing. The injury has hampered his running, but he was determined to compete in the world championships, which he did, finishing in 6:11:18 for 68th in the men’s 65-69 age goup.

Although not a club member, it’s worth noting that Bakersfield resident Robert Lucke, one of the top amateur triathletes in the nation, finished in 4:29:53.

The race was won by Belgium pro Jelle Geens in 3:32:09, and American pro Taylor Knibb won the women’s division in 3:57:34.

The bike course was fraught with rolling and punchy hills, and included some rough, chip-seal surface.
